Desperately Seeking

6.30am: Beep, beep, beep, beep…. argh the sound of the alarm!!!

After snoozing for the millionth time and wishing that I could win the lotto, so that I didn’t have to go to the same job, see the same people (you get the picture), I finally stumbled out of bed, willing myself to get on with the day.

Each day I would do the same thing, just going through the motions. I realised that something had to change and to be quite honest, I’m not even sure how I got to this point. I guess I must have grown up overnight but it got me thinking, how I can get on the Confucius bandwagon of “doing what you love and never working a day in your life”.
I began sifting through articles, searching the net, looking for answers to this proclaimed bliss….

Well, thank God that was me a few years ago. Now let’s fast forward to the present….
I’m certainly happier now and have a new found passion for my work and if you, like me need just an ounce of inspiration, here are a few tips that helped me on my way.

Identify your gifts – Everyone is good at something. When I came across this statement, I had to dig deep as I couldn’t think of a single thing that I was particularly gifted or good at. I started with a list of compliments I received from friends/family over the years, activities I enjoyed doing as well as things I disliked or struggled with.

If at first you don’t succeed…. it may be an oldie but it’s a goodie.

Celebrate every victory – No matter how big or small (small victories are better than none, right!) as this keeps you motivated.

Have fun – We spend most our lives at work after all. Anyone can make work more fun, if you just decide to be bold, flexible and improve your attitude. I promise this will help you de-stress and also have a positive effect on the rest of your life. If all else fails, laughter is the best medicine.

To end it all off, I’ll leave you with a quote from my favourite book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki. “In school we learn that mistakes are bad, and we are punished for making them. Yet, if you look at the way humans are designed to learn, we learn by making mistakes. We learn to walk by falling down. If we never fell down, we would never walk.”

So think about it, what will you do to move closer to your goals/dreams?
